BOUND 2 presents a refined interplay of tension, materiality and quiet sculptural presence. Golden rope is tightly secured around a timber canvas, its surface interrupted by a single copper cord threaded with deliberate precision. The result is a composition that is striking in its simplicity yet rich in expressive force, its metallic fibres catching the light like weathered industrial elements along the harbour’s edge.
Inspired by the structures and textures of Sydney Harbour—particularly the Circular Quay precinct—the work reflects the dynamic meeting point of wood, metal and stone. It echoes the shifting colours and surfaces of the old city pressed against the modern, where heritage timbers, steel fixtures and sandstone foundations coexist in constant visual dialogue.
As part of a series of four works, BOUND 2 explores the values we place on human‑made systems and our attempts to contain, restrain or stabilise the timeless natural world. The bound cords recall the heavy timber bollards that prevent vessels from striking the piers, the ropes straining against tides, engines and weather. The metallic palette underscores the cultural and economic weight placed on these fibres—materials tasked with resisting the immense forces of nature.
Minimal yet resonant, this work stands as a contemporary meditation on strength, fragility and the engineered boundaries we construct in our ongoing negotiation with the environment.
